Induction Ceremony of the President of BASL 2018 / 2019

The Induction ceremony of Mr. Udaya Rohan de Silva, President’s Counsel, the President-elect for the year 2018/2019 was held on 24th March 2018 in a glorious ambience at ‘Miloda’ building in Colombo 01 under the auspicious of Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, the Honorable Prime Minister of Republic of Sri Lanka, His Lordship Priyasath Dep PC, Hon. Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, His Lordship Padman Soorasena, the President of the Court of Appeal and the Mr. Jayantha Jayasooriya PC, Hon. Attorney General of Sri Lanka.

Following Mr. Dappula de Livera PC, Additional Solicitor General of Sri Lanka proclaiming the result of the election for the Post of Presidency of BASL, Mr. Jayantha Jayasooriya PC, inducted Mr. U.R de Siva PC as the newly elected President of Bar Association of Sri Lanka for the year 2018/2019. Mr. U.R de Silva PC who had achieved the office of Presidency of BASL for the year 2017/2018 after a hotly contested election was the only nominee for the same post for the year 2018/2019.

Thereafter, Mr. Kaushlya Nawarathne, delivered his maiden speech as the newly elected Secretary of BASL pledging his unconditional support to the President in pursuance of the goals set for the betterment of the Bar.  His Lordship Padman Soorasena, the President of the Court of Appeal addressing the event acknowledged the vigor and caliber of the newly elected President and drew his particular attention to much awaited infrastructure facilities in the superior Court in order to oil the machinery of the justice. Mr. Jayantha Jayasooriya PC, and His Lordship Priyasath Dep PC, the Chief Justice expressing their respective views highlighted the significance of a strong bond between the Bench and Bar in realizing the spirit of the Rule of Law.  

Afterwards Mr. U.R de Silva PC making his accepting speech succinctly outlined the some of the milestones passed during the outgoing year. He set out the number of measures and initiatives taken by the BASL under his guidance aiming at the upliftment of the Bench and Bar alike and preservation and promotion of the Rule of Law in the Country. While sharing the credit of the success among all the stake holders, he went on to describe path which he would yearn to walk in collaboration of new office bearers during his 2nd tenure as the President of the BASL. Having ardently complimented the outgoing Secretary Mr. Amal Randeniya and Assistant Secretary Mr. Rajitha Hathurusinghe, who had been burning mid night oil for the past two years in steering the BASL in an innovative and unprecedented way, vowed to run his second term with same enthusiasm, energy and confidence to end the journey which he started way back in 2001 in seeking new Horizons by climbing the BASL to the PINNACLE OF SUCCESS.

Then the Annual Report of BASL for the year 2018/2019 which had been dedicated in memory of late Mr. Kandaiya Neelakandan PC, was presented to Mrs. Neelakandan, in recognition of the yeomen service he had rendered during his long and illustrious legal career in driving the legal profession towards ever evolving world.

Finally Mr. Rani Wickramasinge, the Hon. Prime Minister of the Republic of Sri Lanka who was coincidentally a part of the legal fraternity ventilating his views undertook to take prompt actions to address the concerns raised by the previous speakers as contributing to the laws delays. He further added that moves were already underway to digitize the entire Court system in order to make a conducive circumstance to let the channel of justice freely, effectively and expeditiously flow. He having congratulated the newly elect President Mr. U.R de Silva PC, who was labeled as the most abled leader the Bar had produced in the recent past, blessed him with the courage and energy to continue navigating the ship which he had assumed a year ago.   

The Induction ceremony was followed by a cock-tail party hosted by Mr. Kaushalya Nawarathne, in celebration of his election to the Post of Secretary of BASL.
